“Rainbows, unicorns, and marshmallows!” Bianca points to each item on her drawing.

Her brother Nikolai fakes a gag.

She gives me an evil smirk, which makes me laugh. She knows what she’s doing. She’s always trying to get a reaction out of her stoic brother.

“Look what you did to the pink crayon.” Her brother holds it up.

Yeah, we’re going to need a new one. That one is down to the nub.

“Mommy loves pink,” she informs him, tilting her chin up high. “Daddy loves my pictures, so he must love pink, too. He hangs them in his office.”

This is true. Nick Davinci’s office screams power, but the pink unicorn jumping over the rainbows with dancing hearts circling it brings the intimidation level down a few notches.

Nikolai shakes his head and goes back to working on his math.

It’s not even study time, but he loves math as much as Bianca loves pink.

We’re all hanging out in the kitchen. It’s the room that everyone seems to flock to in this house. A ton of my time is spent here. Sophia and Nick happen to be out on a date night, so it’s only me and the kids tonight.

“Should we make cupcakes?” Bianca asks as she starts coloring a new page. “Mommy and Daddy will be home soon, and it could be a surprise.”

“Yes, make cupcakes,” Nikolai chimes in, not looking up from his workbook. He’s so serious sometimes, just like his dad.

“Can we?” Bianca stares up at me. There are dozens of cupcakes already made, but she loves being in the kitchen, and I know I can turn cooking into learning.

“Of course we can,” I tell her and go over to the drawer that has the aprons in it. I open it and pull two of them out. “Are you planning to help, Nikolai?” I know he wants to, but sometimes he won’t admit that he likes doing fun things with us.

So every chance I get, I try to make sure to give him a small push in the direction of not being so serious. “I need a strong man to help mix the batter.” I do an overdone eye roll at Bianca, and she grins back at me.

“I’m a strong man.” He’s already fallen for my trap.

“I’m strong.” Bianca makes a point of flexing a bicep to show me just how strong she is. “Girls are stronger than boys,” she whispers to me. “We only let them think they are. That’s what Mommy always tells me anyway. I’m not supposed to tell anyone but you’re a girl, too, so it’s okay. So, you know.” She gives a small shrug.

“I should probably keep an eye on things.” Nikolai shuts his workbook and hops down to help us.

I hide my smile as we get to work making the cupcakes. These little ones are the only thing that keeps me going. I’ve been at the Davinci house for two months now. The days were so hard at first, but these kids never gave up on me. Bianca, especially.
